YouTube turns 20 in April 2025
On Valentine's Day 2005, the domain name of YouTube.com was activated. YouTube was founded in April 2005 by Steve Chen; Chad Hurley; and Jawed Karim. Jawed shot the first video titled 'Me at the Zoo' at the San Diego Zoo in April 2005. Two decades later, Google owns YouTube. YouTube's revenue was $54.2 billion in 2024. This huge revenue number makes YouTube the second largest media company, behind Walt Disney Co. Last month, YouTube accounted for 12% of US TV viewing. This percentage is more than other rival streaming platforms, including Netflix and Tubi. YouTube is run by CEO, Neal Mohan; since 2023. YouTube started their company in San Mateo, CA; and its corporate headquarters has moved to San Bruno, CA. Susan Wojcicki was CEO of YouTube from 2014 to 2023. She was the former sister in law of Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google. Between 2021 and 2024, YouTube paid $70 billion to video creators. YouTube is worth $475 to $550 billion, according to analysts at MoffettNathanson. YouTube is the second most visited website in the world behind Google, according to Similarweb. YouTube is on track to be the biggest media company by revenue in 2025, according to MoffettNathanson. YouTube could beat out the House of Mouse, Disney. In terms of competitors, TikTok is the most popular one of YouTube. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a huge Chinese technology company. Zhang Yiming is China's richest person, and he is the founder of ByteDance. TikTok's market value is between $250 and $300 billion. TikTok is a social media and short-form online video platform, which has more than 1 billion users. In closing, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006. YouTube is a major player in the online video sharing market. The subsidiary is a major revenue generator for Google.
